DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis defeated visiting San Jose State, 7-0, Tuesday in non-conference women's tennis action at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. It was the second consecutive win for the Aggies, who improved to 2-3 on the season. Herzyl Legaspi and Desiree Stone each won their third straight match in singles.
Doubles play started out with a win by Anita Athavale and Stone at No. 3. The Aggie duo defeated Anna Guzman and Rokie Larijani, 8-2. UC Davis clinched the match's first point when Jenna Kappel and Legaspi completed an 8-1 victory over Silvana Dukic and Dana Popescu at No. 2. The Aggies' Robin Guier and Randi Schuler also won in doubles by defeating Amber Silverstone and Ashley Tavita at No. 1.
UC Davis was equally impressive in singles as it won all six matches in straight sets. The first to finish was Emma Shapiro at No. 5. The Aggie junior played her first match of the dual season and defeated Sanda Hadzisabic, 6-1, 6-0. The next off the court was Jessica Harris, who posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jennifer Williams at No. 6 to give UC Davis a 3-0 lead.
The clinching match came at No. 3 where Stone defeated Tavita, 6-3, 6-2. Additional victories for UC Davis in singles came from Schuler at No. 1, Legaspi at No. 4 and Guier at No. 2.
UC Davis will next face Sonoma State Friday afternoon at home. The Aggies will then play at No. 9 Cal Saturday at 10 a.m. The match with the Bears was originally scheduled for Feb. 3 but was postponed due to rain.
