Aggies Complete Final Day Of Anteater Shootout

IRVINE, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's swimming and diving team won nine of 13 events to sweep three duals from Big West Conference teams during the final day of the Anteater Shootout at the Anteater Pool Saturday afternoon. The Aggie women's team went 2-3 in the championship side of the pool.

The men defeated UC Irvine (83-31), Cal State Northridge (102-9) and Cal Poly (83-28) to finish 4-2 overall during the tournament. After advancing to the championship pool, the women's team finished 2-3 to run their record to 4-5 during the tournament. They defeated Pepperdine (65-48) and Hawaii (60-53), but lost to Stanford (92-20), UNLV (69-44) and BYU (96-17).

Juniors Scott Weltz and Russ Underwood won two events to lead the men's team. Weltz claimed first-place honors in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.28) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.12). Underwood won both sprint freestyle events in 21.64 and 47.71, respectively.

Freshman Alex Daneke and sophomore Adam Borchard each earned first- and second-place finishes. Daneke won the 200 freestyle in 1:43.02 and was second in the 200 backstroke (1:54.19). Borchard pulled out a win in the 500 free (4:35.93) and was second in the 200 free (1:43.42) behind Daneke.

The Aggies finished with four of the top five in the 200 free and also had the top two finishers in the 50 and 100 free.

Daniel Donnelly was the final individual Aggie winner with his time of 1:52.60 in the 200 fly. UC Davis claimed wins in both relay events as well. They went 3:27.19 in the 400 medley and 3:09.31 in the 400 free.

Sophomore Paul Navo and senior Michael Androus led the diving squads with third- and second-place finishes, respectively.

The women faced some of the top teams in the country on the championship side of the pool. Junior Heidi Kucera again put together the best overall showing by placing second in the 200 breast (2:17.81) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:06.52).

The women also claimed a fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:34.92.

Sophomore Linda Hermann finished top 10 in two free events. She was seventh in the 200 free (1:53.49) and eighth in the 500 free (5:04.76).

Sophomores Tyler Ring and Amanda Holman, freshman Kayleigh Foley and senior Mary Struempf added top-10 finishes in their events. Ring was ninth in the 1,000 free (10:34.96) while Struempf finished eighth in the 200 fly. Foley was 10th in the 100 free (54.09) and Holman was eighth in the 50 free at 24.64.

Senior Kendra Hughes was the top finisher on both boards for the women divers.

UC Davis concludes its stay in Southern California tomorrow with an 11 a.m. dual at UC San Diego.
