IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Scott Weltz won the 400-yard individual medley and the 200 freestyle, and junior Heidi Kucera won the 200 breaststroke to lead the UC Davis men's and women's swimming and diving teams on the first day of the Anteater Shootout at the Anteater Pool Friday afternoon. The Aggie women went 2-2 in the multiple dual competition while the men finished at 1-2.
The Aggie women advance to the championship pool tomorrow with a 113-26 victory over Cal State Northridge and a 90-32 win over San Diego. They lost to BYU (106-36) and UNLV (83-57). The men defeated Cal State Northridge as well (114-15), but dropped duals to UNLV (94-37) and BYU (78-54).
Weltz won the 400 IM in 4:04.14 and the 200 free in 1:41.54 to lead the Aggie men. He also placed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.74.
Other top three finishers for the men included Daniel Donnelly placing second in the 200 butterfly (1:53.10), sophomore diver Paul Navo placing third on the 3-meter board (233.05), senior Trent Richardson placing third in the 100 free (46.77) and sophomore Matt Herman placing second in the 1,650 free (15:49.99).
Kucera took first-place honors in the 200 breast at 2:20.81 and was second in the 400 IM (4:11.79). Linda Hermann placed second in the 500 free (5:03.84) while Mary Struempf placed third in the 100 fly (58.26) to highlight the day for the Aggies.
The Aggie women faired well in the two relay events as well. They claimed second in the opening 200 medley relay in 1:48.52 and were third in the 200 free relay (1:39.21). The men's team also finished third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.81.
UC Davis returns for the final day of the shootout tomorrow afternoon. The Aggies then travel to UC San Diego on Sunday for a dual at 11 a.m.
