Nov. 23, 2008

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior utility Adam Bennett scored three goals while senior defender Adam Lindsay added two to lead 11th-ranked and third-seeded UC Davis to an 8-6 win over Santa Clara in the third-place game of the Western Water Polo Association men's championship at Claremont's Axelrod Pool Sunday.

The Aggies end their season with a 13-15 record. The Broncos, ranked 15th nationally, finish up at 16-14.

Sophomores Cory Lyle, Aaron Salit and Matt Richardson each added one goal for UC Davis. Junior Jack Wall scored five goals to lead Santa Clara.

The Aggies trailed 4-2 after Wall's successful five-meter penalty shot with 2:29 remaining in the second period. Bennett converted a 6-on-5 chance in the final seconds of the first half to cut the deficit to one, then tied the game on a natural goal at 4:23 in the third. Lindsay and Richardson also scored in the third frame to lift UC Davis to a two-goal lead.

UC Davis redshirt freshman Kevin Peat collected 10 goalie saves in net, while his counterpart Michael Wishart had 11.

Loyola Marymount won the WWPA tournament with a 12-10 win over UC San Diego in the title game, earning the conference's automatic-qualifier berth to the NCAA Championship.

Salit (first team) and senior Grant Muenter (second team) each earned spots on the all-tournament team. LMU goalie Andy Stevens captured tournament MVP honors.
