Nov. 15, 2008

Complete Regional Results

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Seniors Kaitlin Gregg and Kim Conley earned all-region honors for UC Davis with top-25 finishes in the women's six-kilometer race and K.C. Cody paced the men's team in the 10K race during the NCAA Division I West Region Championships at the Stanford Golf Course Saturday afternoon. Both Aggie teams earned program-best finishes as the women placed sixth and the men were 11th.

Nos. 1 Washington and Oregon won their respective team races. Washington topped the women's race with 25 points while Oregon won the men's race with 38 points. Both schools also boasted the two race winners. UC Davis scored 225 points to finish sixth in the women's race and were the highest finishing Big West Conference school. The men scored 353 to finish 11th.

For the sixth time this season, Gregg and Conley were the top two finishers for the Aggie women. Conley had the best overall finish of 12th in 20:20.79. Gregg was 16th in 20:24.49 to give the Aggies two all-region honorees. The two also become the first UC Davis cross country runners to earn berths into the D-I championships.

Freshman Abbey Gallaher earned a top-50 finish in 21:18.15 and was followed by fellow freshman Krista Drechsler in 21:22.77. Junior Alison Stoakley (22:05.88) rounded out the Aggie scorers.

Sophomore Caitlin Fitzgerald and freshman Kristin Arkin was the displace finishers.

"We had a goal of finishing in the top five coming into the race, but we can't be disappointed with a sixth-place finish," said Aggie head coach Drew Wartenburg. "It's a big step forward for our program to have two individuals competing on the national stage."

Cody led the men's team for the third time and second consecutive week with his 40th-place time of 30:21.69. Sophomore Russ Pfaff was the No. 2 finisher in 49th place at 30:36.45.

Sophomore Andrew Peabody and junior Thomas Dileo were the men's displace scorers.

"We would have liked to squeeze our way into the top 10, but the this is the toughest region in the country," said Wartenburg. "K.C. (Cody), (Russ) Pfaff and (Tyler) Thigpen really stepped it up for us today. We ran controlled and did a good job of running in rhythm."

The Aggie women will learn if they will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships tomorrow. The championships are Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.
