AMES, Iowa - Iowa State needed a big run late in the game to defeat UC Davis, 61-58, Friday in the season opener for both teams. It was the first round of the World Vision Classic, hosted by ISU, at the Hilton Coliseum. The Aggies' Joe Harden led all scorers with 19 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. Vince Oliver added 16 for UC Davis. Iowa State outscored the Aggies, 15-4, in the final 2:38.
Mark Payne, who finished with eight points and 11 rebounds, made a jumper with 3:01 to play to give the Aggies a 54-46 lead. In its next possession, ISU cut it to 54-49 on a three-pointer from Wes Eikmeier. With 2:13 to play, Craig Brackins scored to cut the deficit to 54-51. A pair of free throws by Diante Garrett with 1:30 remaining completed a 7-0 Cyclone run and trimmed the UC Davis lead to 54-53.
Oliver and Brackins then traded buckets, and a pair of free throws by Oliver with 31 seconds left gave the Aggies a 58-55 lead. Brackins responded with a jumper with 20 seconds left to pull ISU within 58-57. After a missed free throw by the Aggies with 17 seconds remaining, ISU took the lead for good five seconds later on a Garrett jumper to make it 59-58. Jamie Vanderbeken added a pair of free throws with four seconds left to account for the final score.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, and Iowa State went to the locker room leading 25-20. UC Davis bolted to a quick lead to start the second half on its way to what would eventually be a 45-31 advantage with 11:47 left in the game. In all, the Aggies opened the half on a 25-6 run, fueled by three treys by Harden as well as one each by Kyle Brucculeri and Dominic Calegari.
The Cyclones responded with an 11-0 run in a span of 1:35 and trailed 45-42 at the 9:59 mark. From that point, the Aggies continued to lead until the Garret jumper with 12 seconds left.
In all, ISU shot 44 percent from the field, including 6-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Cyclones went 5-for-11 from three-point range in the second half after going 1-for-9 in the first. UC Davis shot 34 percent for the night and finished 9-for-25 from beyond the arc. Oliver and Harden each made a trio of three-pointers.
UC Davis outrebounded Iowa State, 41-35. The Cyclones forced the Aggies into 17 turnovers while committing 16. Vanderbeken finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.
UC Davis continues play at the World Vision Classic Saturday when it faces Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The game tips at 1 p.m. PST and can be heard on KFSG 1690-AM as well as www.ucdavisaggies.com. The Aggies conclude the tournament Sunday against Loyola Marymount.
