RIVERSIDE, Calif.-- Senior K.C. Cody finished eighth to lead the UC Davis men's cross country team to a runner-up finish in the eight-kilometer race, while seniors Kaitlin Gregg and Kim Conley placed sixth and seventh, respectively, to pace the women to third place in the 6K race during the 2008 Big West Conference Championships at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course Saturday morning.
It was a program-best finish for both teams at the conference championships. Conley, Gregg and Cody earned all-conference honors for their top-10 finishes. The men's team scored 71 points to finish second behind Cal Poly. UC Riverside won its first conference title on the women's side with 61 points. The Aggies were third behind UC Irvine with 81 points.
"Finishing no worse than second was the men's goal coming into today's meet," said Aggie cross country coach Drew Wartenburg. "They ran a smart, tactical race and kept to our race plan. It was a complete turnaround from last season."
Cody led the Aggie men in his first conference championships with his 8th-place time of 24:39.90. Sophomore Russ Pfaff (24:54.70) and junior Thomas Dileo (25:56.30) finished 12th and 13th, respectively, to just miss out of all-conference consideration.
Closing out the scoring was senior Patrick Parsel (25:08.00) and sophomore
Calvin Thigpen (25:15.50), who gave the Aggies their five finishers in the top 21. Junior Scott Himmelberge and sophomore Andrew Peabody were the men's displacers.
"The women definitely had their sights set higher coming in," said Wartenburg. "It was a bit of a disappointment. We'll just throw this one out and get ready for the regional meet in two weeks."
Gregg was the women's top finisher for the first time this season. She earned her best-ever finish at the conference meet in sixth at 20:31.50. Conley placed right behind her in seventh at 20:34.00. It marked the fifth time this season that Conley and Gregg have finished as the Aggies top two scorers.
Freshman Krista Drechsler and sophomore Caitlin Fitzgerald tied for 20th place at 21:22.30. Junior Alison Stoakley placed 27th (21:40.50) to close the scoring for the women.
Freshmen Abbey Gallaher and Kristin Arkin were the women's displace finishers.
UC Davis uses next week to train before traveling down to Stanford for the NCAA Region Champions on Nov. 15.
