Gauchos Dispatch Aggies In Three-Set Win

Oct. 4, 2008

Final Stats

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore outside hitter Charlene DeHoog posted 11 errorless kills in 14 swings to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 25-16, 26-24, 25-11 sweep of UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Thunderdome Saturday evening.

The Aggies fall to 8-9 overall, 0-4 in conference play. The Gauchos improve to 7-8 for the season and 3-1 in Big West matches.

Senior Renee Ibekwe led UC Davis with 11 kills in 32 attempts, while recording the team's lone ace. Freshman middle blocker Katie Denny provided a boost both offensively and defensively, tallying seven kills on 10 swings to go with a pair of blocks at the net.

UCSB hit .462 in its first-set win and .545 in the third, but struggled to a .081 clip in the second frame. UC Davis put up its strongest effort in the second set, holding a 24-21 triple set point after Denny and senior opposite Chantal Paschetta stuffed a hitting attempt by Lauren McLaughlin. However, the Aggies were plagued by four straight hitting errors as the Gauchos finished the set on a 5-0 run.

UCSB also had a run of five unanswered points to end the third frame. Freshman middle Lily Lopez had a kill and block in that stretch, helping junior Chelsea Pavlik serve out the match.

UC Davis returns home for a Big West Conference weekend series against UC Riverside and UC Irvine on October 11 and 12.
