TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Competing against the top teams in the country at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, the UC Davis women's cross country team placed 12th in the six-kilometer "white" race while the men's team was 23rd in the 8K "white" race at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course Saturday morning. Senior Kim Conley had the best finish of 25th and was the top placer from the Big West Conference. Senior K.C. Cody led the men's team with a 72nd-place showing.
The Aggie women continue their string of successful team finishes and were the best finishing conference team in the 39-team race with 395. Florida State and Princeton tied for the overall team title. On the men's side, the Aggies scored 649 points to finish 23rd in a field of 40 teams. Stanford won the team title.
The day was separated in six races with a "white" and "blue" race to separate the 80 teams that showed up on each side. There was also two open races, one of which junior Alison Stoakley competed in and finished 46th.
Conley finished 25th overall in 20:59 but earn her team 24th-place points. It marks the fourth time this season Conley has led the Aggies. Also for the fourth time this season, fellow senior Katilin Gregg was the No. 2 scorer when she finished 31st in 21:06.
Also finishing in the top 100 in the 281-person field was freshman Krista Drechsler who placed 85th in 21:46. She was followed by fellow freshman Abbey Gallaher in 103rd at 21:57. The two freshmen have now scored in all four races they have competed in this season.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzgerald closed the scoring for the Aggies in 152nd place at 22:23. She was followed by Aggie displacers freshmen Kristin Arkin and Kristina Taylor.
Cody led the men's squad for the second time this season with his 72nd-place time of 24:41. He was the lone Aggie in the top 100 of the 267-man field.
Sophomore Russ Pfaff put together one of his best performances of the season and scored second in 119th-place at 25:03. He was followed by senior Patrick Parsel in 130th at 25:10.
Juniors Thomas Dileo and Scott Himmelberger rounded out the Aggie scores with times of 25:16 and 25:37, respectively. Sophomore Calvin Thigpen and junior Ben DeLand were the displacers.
UC Davis takes off next week to concentrate on training in preparation for the Big West Conference Championships on November 1.
