DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Molly Hayes and sophomore Meghan Corso each scored three goals to lead No. 5 California to a 13-6 win over No. 8 UC Davis in a non-conference women's collegiate water polo game at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.

The Aggies move to 2-1 on the season. The Golden Bears open the year at 1-0.

Freshman Dakotah Mohr posted a team-high two goals and drew a total of four exclusions to lead UC Davis. Ashley Chandler, Lindsay Kiyama, Christi Raycraft and Casie Mota each added one goal.

Cal crafted an early lead, starting the game with three unanswered goals. Grace Reynolds converted an assist from Julie Oreglia in the opening minutes, then Remy Champion drew a five-meter foul that resulted in Hayes' penalty shot at the 5:13 mark. Oreglia then scored on an outside shot at 4:12 to extend the lead. In all, the Bears shot 6-for-7 in the first quarter.

The Aggies reached the scoreboard midway in the first quarter when Chandler's shot caromed off the left post then rolled across the plane behind Cal goalie Heather Stuart. UC Davis rallied late in the opening period. Kiyama converted a 6-on-5 goal at 0:54 to bring the score to 5-2, then Raycraft scored on another man-up chance in the final seconds.

Cal pulled ahead by 7-3 with 2:41 in the second on Corso's 6-on-5 goal, but UC Davis cut the deficit back to three when Mota delivered a long lob into the net just 25 seconds later. However, Golden Bear sophomore Darby Anderson scored at the 0:38 mark in the second to restore her team's lead to four goals.

Mohr fired two shots in a 6-on-5 opportunity in the final seconds of the first half, but Stuart stopped both attempts. The Cal goalie finished the game with 12 total saves, including six in the third period.

UC Davis never approached closer than its three-goal deficit as the Bears scored three goals in the third period and two in the fourth. In all, the Aggies shot 6-for-25 compared to Cal's 13-for-25 clip.

The Aggies return to action on Sunday, February 3, in a Western Water Polo Association game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
