SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly used a 28-5 run in the second half to come from behind and defeat visiting UC Davis, 79-67, Thursday night at Mott Gym. The Mustangs turned a nine-point deficit into a 14-point lead after the run. Shane Hanson led UC Davis (8-11, 2-4 Big West) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Vince Oliver added 12, and Mark Payne finished with 11. Dreshawn Vance led Cal Poly (7-11, 2-4 Big West) with 19. The Mustangs shot 60 percent for the game, including 62 percent in the second half.
UC Davis owned three separate seven-point leads in the first half. The first came at the 13:17 mark after a Kyle Brucculeri three-pointer made it 13-6. Brucculeri finished with three treys and nine points.The Mustangs pulled within two before C.J. Portz made a three-pointer from the right side. Payne followed with a jumper in the lane to give the Aggies a 27-20 lead with 3:41 left in the half.
UC Davis led 29-22 at the 2:22 mark, and the Mustangs responded with three-pointers on their next two possessions to cut it to 29-28. Thomas helped Cal Poly even the score for the first time with a three-pointer with three seconds left in the half to make it 33-33 at the break.
Thomas scored 11 of the Mustangs' final 16 points of the half over a stretch of four minutes and 44 seconds. Cal Poly shot 57 percent in the first half.
A Brucculeri three-pointer early in the second half put the Aggies up 36-33 before the Mustangs scored four straight points to take their first lead of the night at 37-36 with 17:37 remaining. Another Brucculeri trey followed by a Payne layup put the Aggies back in front 41-37.
Four minutes later, Hanson capped off a 5-0 UC Davis run to give the Aggies their largest lead of the night at 51-42 with 12 and a half minutes left in the game. That's when the Mustangs started their 28-5 run over the next nine minutes. By the time it was over, Cal Poly led 70-56 at the 3:15 mark.
UC Davis shot 43 percent for the game and 46 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, the Aggies went 12-for-26 from three-point range. Hanson made five threes, which tied a career-high. UC Davis outrebounded Cal Poly, 33-24.
UC Davis concludes its road trip Saturday night at UC Santa Barbara.
