PALO ALTO, Calif. - Following a week off from competition, the UC Davis cross country teams returned to action Saturday afternoon at the Stanford Invitational, which was held at the Stanford Golf Course. For the first time in his collegiate career, sophomore Thomas Dileo was the top finisher on the men's side in the 8 kilometer race as he helped lead his team to an 11th-place showing while junior Kim Conley led the women's team on the 6K course to 13th-place finish.

Stanford, whose women's team is the defending national champion, swept both the men's and women's races. The men's 8K race featured 312 runners and 32 teams while the women's side had 241 entrants and 28 teams. UC Santa Barbara was the top scoring Big West team in the men's race as they finished third while UC Irvine was best on the women's side as they also finished in third place.

Dileo has been a scorer for the Aggies in every one of his collegiate races, but enjoyed his first race as the team's No. 1 finisher with his time of 25:00. Junior Patrick Parsel, who was the Aggies' top scorer two weeks ago in Washington, was right behind him with a time of 25:27.

Sophomores Adalberto Corres and Scott Himmelberger were the Nos. 3 and 4 scorers, respectively, as they kept their times under 26 minutes (25:52, 25:59). Redshirt freshman Russ Pfaff scored points in his second collegiate race with a time of 26:09. It was the first scoring race for Corres as well.

"It was great to get Corres and Pfaff back, but we were a couple men short today," said men's coach Chris Puppione. "Our entire team is sick right now and we've had to to battle through that this past week. It's unfortunate. You can't go into a race like this without being 100 percent healthy. It was good to see some Big West teams and I believe when we are healthy we can compete with them."

Four of the five scorers for the women's team also scored two weeks ago at the Sundodger Invitational. Conley again led the charge as her time of 21:49 was good enough to place her 24th overall. Senior captain Lorin Scott finished as the No. 2 runner with a time of 22:02, which was 32 seconds faster than her time two weeks ago.

Sophomore Brianna Larson crossed as the team's No. 3 runner (22:544) while junior Kaitlin Gregg was the No. 4 runner (22:52) for the second consecutive meet.

After finishing as the No. 6 runner in the last meet, sophomore Alison Stoakley crossed the line at 23:08 to round out the Aggie scorers.

"We need to get everybody healthy and the only way to do that is to take next week off and rest up," said women's coach Deanne Vochatzer. "We just didn't have a good day today. It was frustrating that we let three Big West schools finish ahead of us, but it gave us some insight of what to expect when the conference championships come along."

The Aggies were originally scheduled to compete next weekend at the San Francisco Invitational, but will forgo that invite and rest for the Santa Clara meet in two weeks.
