DAVIS, Calif. - For the second straight game, one goal was enough to give the UC Davis women's soccer team a win. This time, it was a 1-0 victory over Fresno State, in overtime, on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Stadium to propel the Aggies to their best start in five years. Dayna Dumont scored on a header and was assisted by Corinne Cooley in the 97th minute as UC Davis improved to 2-0 on the year.

Both teams were able to apply consistent pressure for most of the game with 11 shots apiece. For much of the first half, it was the Bulldogs who generated more chances with three corner kicks in the game's first 12 minutes. By the time the half ended, UC Davis held a 5-4 advantage in shots.

The Aggie defense was able to withstand the next 45 minutes without allowing a goal. Seven of the 10 total shots in the second half came off of the feet of Bulldogs. That set up an overtime period in which the Aggies dominated in the attacking third. The last of three Aggies' shots in the extra session was Dumont's game-winner. The senior scored on a header in the box after Cooley looped a pass from the left side. It was Dumont's first goal of the season after leading the Aggies a year ago with five.

"It was a great win. The frustration was that we came out a little flat in the first half and we struggled a little bit," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "(Fresno State) is very good, very technical and very fast. For us to reorganize and get ourselves back with the work rate we needed, I thought we did that. In the second half and in overtime, we were doing a better job of covering the field, winning balls and getting in behind."

In goal, Sarah Peters posted her second shutout of the season for UC Davis. She had two saves on the afternoon.

It was the second 1-0 victory for the Aggies, who defeated Kent State on Friday, and gives them a 2-0 record for the first time since opening the 2002 season with five straight wins.

"It's a great start. In our sport, you can often get a bunch of chances and not get the results you want," added Robinson. "For us to struggle a bit, improve our work rate and improve as a team and then get rewarded, I think it's a great start."

UC Davis will next face South Carolina Thursday on the first day of action at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The Aggies conclude the tournament Sept. 9 against host Central Florida.
