BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Junior Renee Ibekwe posted a match-high 22 kills while senior Kelly Patterson added 13 to lead UC Davis to a 30-23, 30-23, 22-30, 30-22 win over Idaho State in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Cal State Bakersfield's Icardo Center Saturday.
The Aggies pick up their first win of the season, improving to 1-4. The Bengals drop to 2-4 overall.
Ibekwe committed just four errors in 48 attempts for a .375 hitting percentage. Her 22 kills matches her career high, set at Northern Arizona in the season opener. Patterson hit .379 for the match while recording three blocks. Freshman right-sider Melanie Adams also enjoyed a strong offensive match, tallying nine kills and three aces. As a team, UC Davis hit .294 overall, their best match performance since the 2003 season.
Junior middle Jessica Gurney led ISU with 17 kills and a .519 hitting average, while pacing the net defense with three total blocks. Sophomore Emily Waldron had three aces and 15 digs for the Bengals.
The Aggies never trailed in Game 1, piling up an early 19-9 lead behind kills by Adams and freshman Kayla Varney. PAtterson set up game point with a kill at 29-21, then Ibekwe finished the win on a side out two points later. UC Davis also stormed out in Game 2, using consecutive kills and a Varney ace to craft an early 16-7 lead. Ibekwe and Patterson posted back-to-back kills to seal that win and give their team a 2-0 match lead.
Gurney had two kills and Waldron scored back-to-back aces in a 5-1 run that helped ISU pull away from a 10-10 tie in Game 3. Waldron helped stretch the lead to 24-16 with a kill, and the Bengals protected the lead and prevented an Aggie sweep with a 30-22 win in the third.
UC Davis scored seven straight to close out Game 4, pulling away from a 23-22 battle. Ibekwe and Patterson each had three kills in that run, while Patterson teamed up with Adams for a block against Gurney at 24-22.
The Aggies remain in Bakersfield to face the host Roadrunners Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
