FRESNO, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Angela Wiggins posted a team-high 16 kills and hit .333 to help Fresno State rally from Game 1 and Game 2 deficits in a 35-33, 30-27, 30-24 sweep over UC Davis in non-conference collegiate volleyball action at the Save Mart Center Friday evening.
The Aggies fall to 0-4 for the season. The Bulldogs earn their first win, improving to 1-4 overall.
Freshman Kayla Varney led UC Davis offensively, recording a match-high 20 kills with 12 digs and a pair of aces. Sophomore Avreeta Singh, playing in her hometown, led all players with 21 digs defensively.
The Aggies held a late lead in the opening game, moving to 28-25 on a kill by sophomore Britt Erickson. Varney's kill later put UC Davis in a 29-26 game-point situation, but a kill by FSU senior Alisha McKee cut the lead to two points and returned the serve to the Bulldog side. Two points later, McKee scored a solo block to tie the game at 29-29. Varney provided the Aggies with two more game-point chances but FSU managed to tie the game in each spot. Finally, a block by freshmen Lauren Berger and Kasey Van Grouw scored the 35th point and ended the battle.
Varney scored seven kills in Game 2, helping UC Davis craft a late 24-18 lead. Again, the Bulldogs scraped back. Wiggins had four kills in a span of five serves to tie the game at 26-26. She then assisted on a block for the go-ahead point at 27-26, then put down yet another kill to set up a 29-27 game point.
Wiggins struck down six kills in Game 3 as the Bulldogs took the lead for good at 16-15 then stretched the advantage to as much as 20-16. Aggie sophomore Tori Hooper and junior Erin Turner teamed up for a block to bring UC Davis to within a 22-21 deficit but Wiggins registered two kills and a solo block in a 4-0 FSU run that all but sealed up the win.
UC Davis heads to Bakersfield for a neutral-site match against Idaho State on Saturday afternoon, then will face former California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
