Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Angie Mitchell posted 15 kills and hit .406 to lead UC Riverside to a 30-25, 30-27, 30-28 sweep over UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Pavilion Saturday.

The Aggies, playing in their final home match of the season, fall to 3-22 for the year and 0-13 in conference. The Highlanders improve to 6-17 overall and 2-10 in Big West play.

Freshman Kayla Varney led UC Davis with 13 kills while adding nine digs and an ace. Junior Erin Turner compiled a double-double, chipping in 12 kills and 10 digs. She also had three blocks at the net. Sophomore Avreeta Singh led all players defensively with 23 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Dominique Cowling matched Mitchell's match-high total of 15 kills, while sophomore Kelley Quinn figured on five of UCR's nine total blocks.

All three games featured late 25-25 ties, with the Highlanders posting the better finish in each. In Game 1, Cowling had four kills in a 7-0 run that turned a 25-23 Aggie lead to a Riverside win. Mitchell posted seven kills on 11 swings in the opener, including three in a different 7-0 stretch earlier in the set.

The Highlanders manage to post their Game 2 win despite only 10 kills on offense. UC Davis suffered from 13 hitting errors and two service errors, both of which came in the final six Highlander points. Riverside's comeback neutralized a string of seven unanswered by the Aggies early in the frame. Varney and senior Kelly Patterson each had two kills in that run, while junior Renee Ibekwe had one of her two service aces.

In Game 3, Riverside broke away from a 6-6 tie by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, Cowling, Mitchell and sophomore middle Raquel Salinas each had two kills during that stretch. However, sophomore Britt Erickson stepped in to provide much-needed offense. She had four of her six Game 3 kills as part of the Aggies' comeback to a 20-20 tie.

UC Davis managed to take brief one-point leads in the latter stages of the third, fighting to scores of 25-25, 26-26 and 27-27. But the Highlanders summoned freshman Kelly Simpson, who responded with two kills in the final four points.

Saturday's match represented the final home contest for UC Davis seniors Patterson and right-side hitter Katelyn Astruc. The Aggies finish their 2007 season with three road matches, starting with Friday's tilt at Long Beach State.
