LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Davis men's swimming team scored 192 points on the final day of the Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Saturday night to jump over conference rival and host UC Irvine and finish fifth overall at the three-day tournament.
Stanford dominated the event for the third straight day to win the overall title for the fifth consecutive year. BYU was second; Air Force, Pacific and UC Davis rounded out the top five team finishers. The Aggies bettered last year's finish of seventh.
As has been the case all weekend, the best overall finish from UC Davis came in a relay event. The 400-yard freestyle team of Evan Kraus, Russ Underwood, Trent Richardson and Nik Kemp finished fifth in 3:06.27.
Freshman Matt Herman and sophomore Daniel Donnelly both finished eighth in their respective events to highlight the individual accomplishments for UC Davis. Donnelly made the finals in the 200-yard butterfly and had a time of 1:54.16. Herman had the eighth-fastest time in the 1,650 free in 16:04.40.
The UC Davis men's swimming team will take the remainder of 2007 to train. They return to action on Jan. 12 at Washington.
