Nov. 16, 2007

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - Aggie freshman outside hitter Kayla Varney posted team highs of 10 kills and 14 digs but Pacific served up a total of 12 aces to claim a 30-26, 30-19, 30-28 win over UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Spanos Center Friday evening in front of 1,161.

The Aggies finish their inaugural Division I season with 4-24 record and a 1-15 ledger in conference play. The Tigers move to 16-9 overall and finish their Big West slate at 9-7.

Junior Kara Uhl had 14 kills and 13 digs to lead Pacific offensively, while sophomore Meagan MimMack figured in six of her team's nine blocks. Uhl also had three of her team's 12 service aces.

Despite the sweep, the Aggies held late leads in both Games 1 and 3. In the opener, UC Davis pulled ahead to a 12-8 advantage behind the serving of junior Erin Turner, then later took an 18-15 lead on a block by Turner and freshman Julie King. The Tigers bounced back with a 5-0 run at that point, mostly behind two of Uhl's aces, then never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.

In the third game, UC Davis jumped out to a 10-1 lead as senior Renee Ibekwe tallied four kills in support of Turner's serving. Again, Pacific scraped back, eventually tying the frame at 20-20 on Olivia Riley's service ace. UC Davis briefly reclaimed the advantage, taking a 26-24 edge in King's second kill of the match. The Aggies also tied the score at 28-28 when Ibekwe and Kelly Patterson teamed up for a block. Senior middle Johanna Hilbers posted a kill to set up match point, then assumed serving duties for the final point.

Friday's match represented the career finale for Aggie seniors Patterson and right-side hitter Katelyn Astruc. Patterson finished as the team leader in blocks for the second straight year, while former setter Astruc ended her career at No. 4 on the school's career assists list.
