Men's Swimming Fifth After First Day Of Nike Cup

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Davis men's swimming team earned a combined 100 points from solid finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, and sophomore Russ Underwood and junior Evan Kraus both made the consolation final in the 50 free to help lead UC Davis to a fifth-place showing after the first day of the Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Thursday night.

The Aggies totaled 151 points on the first day of the three-day tournament and sit tied with host UC Irvine for fifth place. They are the second-highest ranking Big West schools at the meet; Pacific is fourth.

Four-time defending Nike Cup champion and No. 3-ranked Stanford won all five men's events and scored 597 points to jump out to a huge lead over BYU. The Cardinal set new meet records in both relay events.

Underwood and Kraus combined with Nik Kemp and Jeffrey Babcock to place fifth in the 200 free relay with their time of 1:24.52. The Aggies also had two other relay teams in the top 25 to score a total of 50 points in the event. In the 400 medley relay, Kraus teamed with Jimmy Fong, Russell Taylor and Daniel Donnelly to score another fifth-place finish (3:26.85). UC Davis also had two other scoring teams in that event for an addition 50 points.

Both Underwood and Kraus also highlighted the individual performances by advancing to the consolation finals in the 50 free. Kraus finished 10th while Underwood was right behind in 11th as they combined to score 33 points.

Senior Kyle Leto was the top finisher in the 500 free, finisg, placing 13th. Junior Alex Arbios and freshman Matt Herman also scored in that event.

Along with swimming the second leg of the top-finishing 400 medley relay team, Taylor also scored as an individual in the 200 individual medley, placing 20th for five points.

The second day of the Nike Cup begins Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. The finals begin at 6 p.m.
