STANFORD, Calif. - UC Davis began play, Friday, at the ITA Northwest Championships in Stanford. The Aggies' Desiree Stone won her first two matches to advance to the round of 32. A total of nine Aggies are taking part in the tournament, including four doubles teams. UC Davis collected a total of six wins on the day.
Action began in the doubles draw where a pair of Aggie teams advanced from the round of 64. Kaitlin Callan and Andrea Phillips defeated San Jose State's Gaby Filipcik and Jen Williams, 8-2. In addition, Anita Athavale and Herzyl Legaspi posted an 8-1 victory over SJSU's Ana Guzman Dana Popescu. Both of the Aggie tandems were defeated in the round of 32.
In singles, Stone started her day with a straight sets victory in the round of 128. She defeated Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 6-3. In the round of 64, Stone overcame a first set loss to defeat Washington's Aleksandra Malovic, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Other round of 128 winners for UC Davis included Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro. Andrea Phillips advanced out of the first round after her opponent withdrew due to an injury.
The two wins for Stone improves her to 3-1 on the year. She will next face Cal's Cristina Visico with the winner advancing to the round of 16. Harris, Kappel, Athavale, Phillips, Legaspi and Callan will all play in the consolation round of 64.
The four-day tournament features singles and doubles entries from 16 schools in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest region. The event is being hosted by Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
