MORAGA, Calif. - UC Davis opened its fall season Saturday with a busy day at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga. The tournament was scheduled to begin Friday before all opening day matches were postponed due to rain. As a result, the first two rounds of singles and doubles were played on Saturday. The Aggies' Andrea Phillips went perfect on the day with two wins in singles and another in doubles. In all, the Aggies picked up a combined 11 singles and doubles wins.
Phillips defeated San Jose State's Cassandra Borjon, 6-1, 6-2, in the Flight 2 round of 32. She went on to defeat Sonoma State's Mary Bulich, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. The junior also paired with Emma Shapiro in Flight 2 doubles to defeat San Jose State's Borjon and Ella Mahony, 8-1.
Freshman Shawdee Rouhafza and junior Jessica Harris were also multiple winners on the day. Rouhafza picked up wins in Flight 3 singles in both the round of 16 and quarterfinals while advancing to the semifinals. Harris was also a double-winner in the same flight and next plays in a semifinal match on Saturday. In addition, Shapiro and Sidney Brady picked up wins in singles.
In other doubles action, Anita Athavale and Herzyl Legaspi won their first two matches to advance to the Flight 1 semifinals.
