Davis, Calif. - Five different Aggies won multiple events on Friday afternoon to lead the swimming and diving teams to a sweep of Cal State Bakersfield at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The men defeated the Roadrunners by a score of 167-118 while the women won with by a score of 130-112.
The victory pushes the men's record to 9-4 in dual meets while the women jump up to 10-6 on the season.
In a great all-around performance by both teams, four men and one woman earned multiple victories on the day. Alex Arbios was dominant in the distance events as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:35.57 and the 500 free in 4:41.43.
Daniel Donnelly also continued to put up impressive performances in the backstroke events as he won both the 100 (52.90) and 200 (1:56.11) events.
In much the same way, Scott Weltz dominated the butterfly events by taking both the 100 and 200 in times of 50.64 and 1:52.71, respectively; the latter of which was a season-best time in the event.
Rounding out the double event winners on the men's side was Evan Kraus who again swept the 50 and 100 free for the second straight week as he clocked times of 21.25 and 46.76, respectively.
On the women's side of things, Heidi Kucera was the only double event winner as she gained victories in the 200 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley. Her time of 2:22.81 in the 200 breast was over eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher while her time of 4:32.21 in the IM bettered second place by almost eleven seconds.
The women also gained winning performances by Jill Olson and Ashley Cayford while Russell Taylor was the other man to taste victory. Olson clocked a time 24.38 in the 50 free to top her previous season-best time by .42 seconds. Cayford earned the top spot in the 100 free with a season-best time of 53.97 while Taylor was first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.11.
For the first time in over two months, the diving teams were back in action. Krysta Chaldekas started right where she left off in November as she won the 3-meter event with a score of 246.75 while claiming second on the 1-meter board (217.95). Hannah Ures was right behind Chaldekas on the low board as she scored 210.83 to finish third. Ures also finished fourth on the high board with a score of 202.20.
Mike Hui was the best men's diver on the low board as he placed second with a score of 197.63. Stephen Lee was the most consistent diver with third place showings on the 1M (197.25) and 2M (185.40) boards. Kevin Reagle was the top Aggie finisher on the high board with a second-place score of 192.68.
Overall the Aggies won 17 of the 29 total events on the day. The men never trailed during the meet as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead with a 1-3 split in the opening 200 medley relay. The team of Donnelly, Taylor, Weltz and Patrick Jacobson took the top prize with a time of 1:33.28 while Andrius Urbaitis, Jacob Damante, Kraus and Matt Crawford took third in 1:37.02.
The men held a commanding 167-85 lead heading into the final two races and eventually conceded those events as exhibition races - both of which were won by Bakersfield.
"I asked our guys to be focused, fast and loose today and I think they executed that well," said men's coach Pete Motekaitis. "I'm really excited that we have a record of 9-4 right now. I was impressed with the improvements to our medley relay and fly events and I also liked our efforts in the distance and sprint events. I think we're right where we need to be at this point of the season."
It was a much different story for the women, as the two teams battled throughout the meet. The Aggies also jumped out to an early lead behind the winning 200 medley relay team of Cayford, Jennifer Ginsberg, Amber Bonds and Hannah Watanabe, who clocked a time of 1:48.69. They were followed by the second-place team of Kucera, Janice Leung, Emily Medved and Melanie Covert (1:52.35).
Bakersfield would eventually take the lead behind a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 free and 200 fly. But the Aggies would retake the lead for good in the next event as Olson, Watanabe and Bonds went 1-2-3 in the 50 free to give their team a 49-43 lead.
Heading into the final relay event, the Aggies were only seven points ahead with the diving scores yet to be factored in. Needing to finish at least 1-3 to secure a comfortable victory, they did just that to take the 130-112 decision. Ginsberg, Cayford, Covert and Olson teamed up to finish first in 3:37.91 while Leung, Laura Leppke, Bergen Beck and Kathryn Jovino were third in 3:48.68.
"We had a lot of different people step up today," said women's coach Barbara Jahn. "We were down to about 13 swimmers today because of sickness and class conflicts, so I'm happy with what we were able to do. It was definitely pressure filled heading down the stretch and I'm glad about that because it gives us needed experience when we head into the Big West Championships. It also boosts our confidence to win a meet like this."
The swimming and diving teams will return to the Schaal Aquatics Center on Feb. 3 for the final time this season as they host UC Irvine at 11 a.m. It will mark the final home meet for 11 Aggie seniors.
