Defensive tackle Naveen Daftari, quarterback Jon Grant, guard Jonathan Compas and running back Alex Garfio were each named on Tuesday to the Great West Football Conference All-Academic team, highlighting achievement in the classroom for the standout UC Davis football players.
Compas was earlier named to the All-GWFC first team for his performance on the field during the Aggies' 6-5 season while Grant was a second-team honoree after throwing for 2,762 yards and 19 touchdowns. Daftari and Grant earned distinction on the conference's all-academic team for the third consecutive year.
Selection to the team requires that the student-athletes achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
Daftari, a 6-foot-1, 280-pound senior from Davis, carries a 3.60 GPA in electrical engineering. He finished this past season with 23 total tackles, including an 11-yard sack and 3.0 tackles-for-losses totalling 15 yards. Fourteen of his tackles were solo stops.
Grant, the GWFC Offensive Co-Player of the Year as a junior, finished his career among the program's most prolific all-time passers. He concluded his career with 8,220 career passing yards and 50 touchdowns while accounting for 8,506 yards of total offense. His passing and total offense yards are both second all-time at UC Davis. Grant, from Pacific Grove, Calif., has a 3.47 GPA in history.
Compas, a 6-4, 283-pound sophomore from Carlsbad, has a 3.37 GPA in international relations. He was part of an offensive line that this season helped UC Davis average 365.1 yards per game of offense, including 262.1 through the air. The offensive line only allowed 13 sacks in more than 400 passing plays as well.
Garfio, a 5-9, 200-pound senior from Ventura, saw action in just six games before suffering a season-ending injury. He still finished second on the team in rushing with 225 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Garfio also caught 19 passes for 219 yards. He has a 3.29 GPA while majoring in sociology.
Eleven members of the All-GWFC teams, including five first-team honorees, were honored on the league's all-academic team.
