PULLMAN, Wash. - Boise State tallied 16 total blocks, including six by sophomore setter Mandy Klein, to sweep UC Davis by scores of 30-23, 30-28, 30-17, in the first day of the Baden Cougar Classic women's volleyball tournament at Washington State's Bohler Gym Friday.
The Aggies fall to 1-3 for the season. The Broncos improve to 3-2 overall.
Senior Rachel Keener was a bright spot for UC Davis offensively, recording 14 kills and a .276 hitting average to go with four block assists on net defense. She was the only Aggie to score in double figures, as the remainder of the team committed 30 errors against just 22 kills for a success rate of minus-.072.
Boise State outside hitter Kristen Voyson led her team with 10 kills and hit .350. Senior middle Cameron Flunder and sophomore outside Jeanette Jenkins each contributed on five blocks, while senior Jackie Stroud led all players with 19 digs for the match.
UC Davis overcame an early 12-7 deficit in Game 1, getting two kills from Keener and another by setter Katelyn Astruc to cut the margin to 17-16. Astruc later served up a pair of aces to provide the Aggies with a short-lived 21-20 lead. However, Elise Ardron's net defense helped the Broncos score seven unanswered points to break away from a 23-23 tie, claiming the first game. Keener had five errorless kills on nine swings in that game, but the rest of the UC Davis offense suffered 13 attack errors.
The Aggies again recovered from an early deficit in Game 2, taking a 24-21 after having trailed by as much as 17-11. Kelly Patterson put up five kills in the second game, while senior Nicole Read hit 3-0-4 in that frame. Flunder served up a key ace to crack a late 27-27 tie, then Keener's kill knotted the game at 28-28. BSU put up two points on an Aggie service error and a kill by Ardron to take a 2-0 lead in games.
The Broncos dominated the third game while the Aggies' offensive struggles continued. BSU crafted an early 12-5 lead, helped by three Flunder block assists in a span of seven points. UC Davis scraped back to within a 17-13 deficit before the Broncos enjoyed a 6-0 run, mostly behind the serving of Jamie Claussen. The Aggies commited five of their 13 third-game hitting errors down the stretch as Boise completed its sweep.
Freshmen Tori Hooper and Carson Lowden each made their collegiate debuts in Game 3, as all 14 Aggies saw time in the match. Hooper posted a solo stuff and two block assists, while Lowden recorded a kill and a dig.
UC Davis continues play at the Baden Cougar Challenge on Saturday, facing UNLV at 1 p.m. then host Washington State at 7 p.m.
