Tognetti's One-Hitter Leads UC Davis To Split

DAVIS, Calif. - Lindsay Tognetti threw a one-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader, Saturday afternoon, at La Rue Field as UC Davis split with Long Beach State. The Aggies edged the 49ers, 1-0, in the first game before LBSU posted an 8-3 victory in game two. Tognetti allowed just one first inning hit and retired 14 of the last 15 batters she faced in her complete-game shutout.

Neither team scored in game one until UC Davis (15-35) broke through against Michelle Turner in the fourth inning. With one out, Ashley Johnson doubled, and Nikki Sheldon doubled on the next pitch to drive in Johnson with what turned out to be the game's only run.

Tognetti allowed just three 49ers to reach base the entire game. Tiffani Wedell collected LBSU's only hit when she tripled with one out in the first. Tognetti got out of the jam with a pair of pop-ups. After a one-out walk in the third, Tognetti (8-14) retired the next 13 batters before surrendering a two-out walk in the seventh.

UC Davis outhit Long Beach State, 7-1, in game one.

LBSU (27-19) scored three unearned runs in the first inning of the second game to take an early 3-0 lead. Two of the runs came home on walks with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the second, the Aggies came back with a one-out, two-run homer from Deanna Menapace to make it 3-2. The blast was the second of the season for the freshman. In the third, Julie Stauder scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

The 49ers responded in the fourth with a run to regain the lead at 4-3 before posting four more runs in the fifth to make it 8-3.

LBSU outhit UC Davis, 8-6, in the second game.

UC Davis will conclude its home schedule at La Rue Field Sunday when it faces LBSU in the final game of the series. The contest will also be part of Senior Day as Stacey Benzing, Megan De La Hoya and Marci Hill will be honored prior to the game.
