DAVIS, Calif. - Despite posting the first goal of the game, the No. 15 UC Davis women's water polo team was unable to overcome No. 9 UC Irvine in a non-conference game played at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday evening. The Anteaters posted four goals in the second quarter, all from the outside, to take the advantage and eventually end the game with the 7-1 win.
The Aggie season record falls to 13-10 while the Anteaters' are now 15-10.
Katherine O'Rourke opened the match for the Aggies with a penalty drawn two and a half minutes into the game. Sophomore Christi Raycraft converted the penalty shot to give UC Davis the early 1-0 lead.
With two minutes and 10 seconds on the clock in the first, Robyn Kaake fired a shot from the outside that found its way into the high corner of the Aggie cage to tie the score up at 1-1 leading into the second quarter.
The Anteater offense gained momentum early in the second as UC Irvine's Julia Fancher scored on a hard outside shot thirty seconds into the quarter. UC Irvine then went onto to post three more unanswered goals, Kaake posted her second point of the game while Jackie Prine added two to the Anteater tally.
In the third quarter the Aggies were able to slow the Anteater onslaught, holding UC Irvine scoreless for the majority of the period, but with just 18 seconds left on the clock, Kelsey Haroldson was able to find the cage for the Anteaters bringing the score to 6-1 heading into the final seven minutes of play.
The Aggies and Anteaters traded a pair of ejections in the fourth quarter, but neither team was able to convert their six-on-five opportunity. In the final minute of the game, Angela Briggs posted the last Anteater goal bringing the final score to 7-1.
UC Davis has a full weekend ahead as they begin action at the 26th Annual Davis Shootout on Saturday, April 8. The Aggies will face Western Water Polo Association opponent Colorado State at 10:10 a.m. before facing No. 14 UC San Diego at 3:35 p.m.
