DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Sacramento State in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Hornets won game one, 5-3, and outlasted the Aggies, 4-3, in the eight innings in the second game. The games were part of a "Strikeout For Cancer" fundraiser sponsored by the UC Davis softball team that helped raise money for the UC Davis Cancer Center.
In the first game, Sacramento State (25-16) scored an unearned run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. UC Davis (13-27) would come back in the bottom of the inning as Megan De La Hoya walked and came home on a two-out, two-run homer by Ashley Johnson to make it 2-1. The blast was Johnson's fourth of the season.
The Hornets responded in the second inning with two runs to reclaim the lead. The first came home on a wild pitch, and the second scored when Amy Tompkins reached on an error to make it 3-2. In all, three of the Hornets' five runs were unearned.
The Aggies would tie the score at 3-3 in the third before the Hornets scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to account for the game's final score. Lindy Winkler went 3-for-4 in the first game for the Hornets.
Sacramento State struck quickly in the second game, as well, with two runs in the first inning. Both came come on a two-out triple by Gloria Toledo to make it 2-0. Winkler upped the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a two-out double.
Meanwhile, Hornet starter Cassie Cervantes was cruising into the fourth inning. She retired 11 of the first 13 batters she faced with seven strikeouts and no hits allowed. With two outs and no one on in the fourth, the next six Aggies reached base. Four drew walks and two were hit by pitches. Deanna Menapace drove in the first run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Christina Grimm followed with a walk to make it 3-2. Sarah Phleger also walked to force in the tying run.
Neither team scored until the top of the eighth when Toledo led off with a home run down the left field line to give Sacramento state the eventual 4-3 win. Toledo went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs and three RBIs.
The Aggies were outhit in the second game, 9-1, but drew five walks and were hit three times by pitches. The lone hit of the game for UC Davis came from Sarah O'Neill leading off the sixth inning.
The UC Davis softball team wishes to thank everyone who came out to show their support for the Aggies and to help fight cancer at the same time. Fans had the opportunity to make a donation based on the total number of strikeouts by Aggie pitchers or by contributing at a single level. All proceeds went to the UC Davis Cancer Center. For the day, the UC Davis staff posted 13 strikeouts.
UC Davis is next in action Saturday when it begins a three-game series at Cal Poly. The teams will take part in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
