AUSTIN, Texas - The UC Davis men's 'A' 400-yard medley relay of Matt Jones, Kyle Payne, Scott Weltz and Evan Kraus finished in third place with a mark of 3:25.58 in the final event of the 2006 American Short Course Championships which concluded Saturday after three days of record setting swimming at the Lee and Joe Jamall Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
In the same 400 medley relay heat that the Aggie men took third in, the Longhorn Swim Club 'A' relay consisting of Olympic medalists Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker and Neil Walker set a new American record in the event with a mark of 3:02.94.
Freshman Scott Weltz, who grabbed the UC Davis school record in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday evening, posted the best time by an Aggie this season in the 1,650 freestyle. In Weltz's first 1,650 swim of the season, he posted a mark of 15:41.65 and took seventh place in the event. Weltz's time is the second best in UC Davis history. Alex Arbios finished tenth in the 1,650 freestyle with a mark of 15:52.80.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Peter Hagens posted the best time for the Aggies this season with a mark of 46.10 seconds, the ninth best time in UC Davis history and a personal best time for Hagens by .62 seconds.
Matt Jones had the top Aggie finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:52.54 in the event's 'C' final.
In the final individual race of the night, the 200-yard individual medley, U.S. gold medalist Michael Phelps touched the wall in a time of 1:41.30, an American record in the event and the third American record for Phelps over the weekend. A total of eight American records were broken during the three-day event.
The American Short Course Championships marks the end of the 2005-06 UC Davis men's swimming season. The Aggies finished the season with a 7-4 dual record and a program-high second place finish at the Big West Conference Championships.
