Final Stats
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 8 California scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat UC Davis, 2-1, in the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader on its way to a sweep of the Aggies at Levine-Fricke Field. Cal shut out UC Davis, 8-0, in game one as Kristina Thorson threw a five-inning no-hitter. Cal entered the game ranked 8th in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top-25 Poll.
In the first game, Cal (31-3), got off to a fast start with four runs in the first inning. The big hit was a two-out double by Carly Winger that drove in three runs to make it 4-0. In the second, Emily Friedman had a two-out triple to drive in two more and make it 6-0. The Bears scored two times in the fourth to account for the final scoring of the game.
Thorson allowed just three batters to reach base as she scattered three walks in five innings of work while striking out nine.
In the second game, UC Davis (9-20) wasted little time getting on the board. In the top of the first, Julie Stauder drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on an RBI-groundout by Nikki Sheldon to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
That advantage would hold up before Cal scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gina Leomiti led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After Erika Racklin came in to pinch run, Lindsay James reached on an error, putting runners on second and third with no outs. A fielder's choice allowed the tying run to score and a sacrifice fly by Friedman drove in the winning run.
Despite not allowing an earned run, Christina Grimm suffered the loss. She gave up just four hits and fell to 1-4 on the year. Thorson came on in relief to pick up the win in game two as she improved to 21-2 on the year.
UC Davis is next in action Saturday when it begins a three-game series at Pacific. Action begins at noon with a doubleheader followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
