Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - UC Davis fell victim to a pair of shutouts at the hands of Stanford, Sunday, on the final day of action at the Stanford Invitational II. The Cardinal defeated the Aggies, 11-0, in the first game before edging the Aggies, 3-0, in the second game. Stanford's Missy Penna threw a six-inning no-hitter in the first game. Megan De La Hoya and Julie Stauder each had two hits on the day for UC Davis (9-18).

Stanford (26-4), which entered the day ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 Poll, scored in four of the six innings of game one. In the third, and leading 3-0,Michelle Smith hit a two-run homer to give the Cardinal a 5-0 lead. Stanford led 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth when a grand slam by Lindsay Key ended the game.

Penna dominated UC Davis batters as she struck out seven and walked just one. She retired the first 13 batters she faced before walking Sarah O'Neill with one out in the fifth. O'Neill was later erased on a double play as Penna faced the minimum of 18 batters.

Game two took on an entirely different dimension as Lindsay Tognetti held the Cardinal attack at bay through the first four innings. The game was scoreless into the fifth before Stanford broke out on top in the home half of the inning. With two outs and no one on, Anna Beardman singled and stole second. Catalina Morris followed with an RBI-single to put Stanford on top 1-0. In the sixth, Erin Howe had a two-out single that drove in two more to make it 3-0.

Stanford outhit UC Davis 9-0 in the first game and 8-5 in the second game. De La Hoya and Stauder each went 2-for-3 in game two. Tognetti suffered the loss in both games. She allowed one earned run in one and two-thirds innings in the first game and allowed just one run in five innings of game two. She struck out six on the day.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for UC Davis as the Aggies next face California on Wednesday. The Golden Bears are currently ranked No. 7 and hold a 29-3 record. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m.
