STANFORD, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Princeton, 3-1, on Friday on the opening day of action at the Stanford Invitational II. The game was the first for the Aggies since March 13 and the first of five games in three days at the five-team tournament. The game featured five hits, all singles, by each team as the Tigers scored runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings.
Neither team put a runner on base through the first two innings before Princeton (9-6) broke through in the top of the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kathryn Welch drove in an unearned run with an infield single to put the Tigers up 1-0. In the fifth, Cristina Cobb-Adams provided a one-out RBI-single to drive in Larkin Brogan with the game's second run.
Held to just one hit in the first five innings, the UC Davis attack came through with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Deana Menapace led off with a pinch-single. Megan De La Hoya reached on an error, putting runners on first and third with still no outs. Julie Stauder followed with a run-scoring single to pull the Aggies within 2-1. Princeton's Kristen Schaus then got out of the inning with a foul out and a pair of strikeouts.
Princeton added another unearned run in the seventh to account for the final score. The Aggies tried to rally in their half of the seventh with singles by Roxanne Hannan and Jodie Valley, but Schaus had one more timely strikeout to retire the side.
Christina Grimm suffered the loss for the Aggies, despite allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. She allowed four hits and struck out two.
UC Davis (8-15) will next face Santa Clara (11 a.m.) and Illinois (5 p.m.) Saturday. The Aggies' Sunday schedule features a doubleheader with host Stanford, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation.
