Aggies Grab Two Conference Wins On The Road

Feb. 5, 2006

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Twelve different Aggies posted goals as the UC Davis women's water polo team took two Western Water Polo Association conference wins on Sunday against UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Monterey Bay. The Aggies defeated the Banana Slugs 13-3 in Santa Cruz before traveling to Monterey where they defeated the Otters 15-2 later in the afternoon.

In the first game of the day, the Aggies took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter against UC Santa Cruz while the Slugs remained scoreless. The Slugs managed two goals in the second while the Aggies slipped five more in the back of the net to bring the score to 9-2 at halftime. UC Davis added four points in the second half while the Slugs slipped one more past the Aggie defense to end the game with a 13-3 final score in favor of UC Davis. Mary Lowe led the Aggies with four goals while Katherine O'Rourke added a hat trick.

In Monterey, the Aggies once again took an early lead in the first quarter posting five goals to the Otters' one. UC Davis doubled their score in the second with another five-point quarter in the second to bring the halftime score to 10-1. Monterey Bay found the cage for the second time in the third quarter, but the Aggies posted five more goals in the second half to take the 15-2 win. Ashley Greenwood led the Aggies with a hat trick against the Otters.

"Playing on the road was good for us, it is not easy to travel. Both teams we played are conference opponents and we may face either team in the first round of the conference tournament so we needed to send a message," said head coach Jamey Wright.

"Today's games were a good chance to get a good look at players that didn't get a lot of time against Cal or San Jose State. A lot of our younger players, Kiyama, Odegard and Patronas, all played well. Mary Lowe also had some great goals and we need her pressence to be strong as a lefty. It was also a good opportunity for Amber (Korner) and Diana (Pivacek) to gain experience in the goal. Ashley (Greenwood) also played well. All three of her goals against Monterey came out of two-meters in power moves. She was getting hammered by the defense and she showed good composure."

With the two wins, the Aggie season record has been lifted to 4-2 overall and to 4-0 in the WWPA. The Aggies will be in action again at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational being held at UC San Diego Feb. 11-12.
