LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC Davis women's water polo team defeated No. 13 Indiana 6-2 Sunday afternoon to take seventh place at the fourteen-team UC San Diego Triton Invitational which was being held at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center this weekend. The Aggies dropped an early morning match-up to UC Irvine 4-2 before defeating the Hoosiers.

In the first game of the day versus the Anteaters, UC Irvine got on the board first with two goals in the opening quarter. The Anteaters brought their lead to 4-0 in the second with another pair of goals.

The Aggies stepped up their offensive efforts in the third and put away the lone goal of the quarter. In the final quarter, the Aggies were able to score another unanswered goal, but it was not enough as they fell to the Anteaters, 4-2.

Junior Katherine O'Rourke and freshman Lindsay Kiyama scored the two goals for UC Davis.

"We played a really good defensive game, but we can't squander our 6-on-5 opportunities and go two for 15 against the good teams," said head coach Jamey Wright.

In the seventh place game, the Aggies took an early lead with a six-on-five goal less than 30 seconds into the first quarter. The Hoosiers responded with a power play goal of their own before the Aggies once again took a one-point lead with a goal out of center.

In the second period, UC Davis found the back of the net twice, once on a six-on-four advantage, giving the Aggies a 4-1 lead going into halftime. The Aggies furthered their lead in the third with two six-on-five goals. The Hoosiers scored the lone goal in the fourth quarter, but UC Davis took the 6-2 victory and the seventh place finish. Jessica Soza led the Aggies with two goals in the win.

Following Sunday's games, the Aggie season record currently stands at 6-4 overall. UC Davis will take a week off of competition before heading to UC Santa Barbara where they will take on the Gauchos on Friday, Feb. 24 and then play in the Gaucho Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26.
