LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC Davis women's water polo team split a pair of games on the first day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational taking an 8-4 win over No. 14 Hartwick Saturday afternoon before falling to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara 5-2 at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool. The Aggies, who hold currently hold a 5-3 season record, will face No. 12 UC Irvine at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
In UC Davis' first game of the tournament, they took on the Hawks of Hartwick. The Hawks got on the board first with a goal from Bronwen Knox, but the Aggies matched the goal to tie the score at 1-1 going into the second quarter.
The Aggies opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals. Hartwick was able to tally another point, but it was followed by an Aggie goal during the next possession to bring UC Davis' lead to 4-2. In the third the Aggies furthered their lead by two while simultaneously keeping the Hawks scoreless.
In the final quarter both teams tallied two goals and when the final buzzer rang, the Aggies had the 8-4 advantage. UC Davis' Christi Raycraft led the team with a hat trick against Hartwick.
In the second game of the day, the Aggies took on the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies once again ended the first quarter with a 1-1 tie, but in the second quarter UC Santa Barbara was able to collect two unanswered goals.
The Gauchos tallied one point per quarter in the second half while the Aggies only managed a single point in the final quarter giving the Gauchos a 5-2 victory. Cassie Schaefer and Casie Mota were the scorers for the Aggies.
On Sunday, the second and final day of the tournament, the Aggies will face UC Irvine in the morning with the outcome determining whether they play for fifth or seventh place in the fourteen-team tournament.
