POCATELLO, Idaho - Guard David Schroeder led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday night while teammate Akbar Abdul-Ahad had 13 points and 11 assists as host Idaho State took the lead for good midway through the first half and posted a 76-49 nonconference men's basketball win over UC Davis before 3,114 fans at Holt Arena.
UC Davis, in the midst of a portion of its schedule which has the Aggies playing nine of their first 10 games on the road, fell to 1-7 while Idaho State won its second straight game and is 4-5. Senior Ari Warmerdam scored 12 points to pace the Aggies while Thomas Juillerat and Jesse Lopez Low each had 11.
Idaho State shot 59 percent from the field while holding the Aggies to just 33 percent. The Bengals also made 53 percent of their attempts from beyond the three-point while UC Davis made just 24 percent.
The Aggies got off to a good start, scoring six straight points early in the game to take a 6-2 lead as Lopez Low, Warmerdam and Juillerat each scored underneath. Shane Hanson's first of three treys made it 9-5, a lead UC Davis maintained until Schroeder hit a three to tie the game 10-10 midway through the half. That was part of a 10-0 run by the Bengals that put them up 17-10 with 7:53 left.
Leading 23-14 with 5:08 remaining, the Bengals outscored the Aggies 7-3 the rest of the half to take a 30-17 lead into halftime. The Aggies shot just 28 percent from the field in the first half while Idaho State made 12 of 23 tries for 52 percent.
Down 35-19 early in the second half, UC Davis made a run at the Bengals, getting a pair of layups from Juillerat and a three-pointer from Warmerdam to climb within 35-26 with just over 16 minutes to play. Baskets from Warmerdam and C.J. Portz made it 41-33 with 12:52 left but a three-pointer by Schroeder ignited a 15-4 run that put Idaho State in front 56-37 with 9:04 to go. The Aggies did not get closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
UC Davis shot just 33 percent (18 of 54) from the field in the game, including making just seven of 29 three-point attempts. The Bengals made 59 percent of their attempts (30 of 51) which was highlighted by making 10 of 19 three-point attempts. Schroeder had four three-pointers.
The Aggies were without the services of injured point guard Rommel Marentez but did welcome back sophomore Kyle Brucculeri, last year's leading scorer who had not played in the first seven games due to injury. He played 10 minutes but did not score.
UC Davis will take a break for final exams before returning to the road for a Dec. 19 matchup at Portland State.
