DAVIS, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Kim McGiven slammed a match-high 12 kills while junior middle Anna Cmaylo hit .500 offensively to lead 22nd-ranked Santa Clara to a 30-24, 30-22, 30-15 sweep over UC Davis in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Tuesday evening.
The Aggies drop to 4-22 for the year. The Broncos improve to 18-6.
Sophomore opposite Chantal Paschetta had eight kills and a pair of blocks to lead UC Davis, which suffered from nine total service errors and were outdug by their guests by a 51-31 margin. Senior Nicole Read and sophomore Renee Ibekwe chipped in 11 kills between them, while sophomore defensive specialist Michelle Nelson had six digs and her team's lone ace.
SCU freshman opposite Lindsy Evans had 11 kills and compiled six of her team's 10 aces. McGiven led the Broncos with 17 digs while Caroline Walters and Brittany Lowe each added 11.
Evans served back-to-back aces and added a kil midway through Game 1 to help Santa Clara craft a 17-11 lead. A pair of kills from Paschetta helped UC Davis close the gap to 21-17 later in the game,then her seventh kill brought the Aggies to within a 27-24 deficit. Senior middle blocker Megan Pura put down an Aggie free ball for a kill to set up game point, then McGiven delivered a kill through the midcourt for the game-winner.
In Game 2, Walters served up a 7-0 run that helped the Broncos stretch a 15-13 edge to a more comfortable 22-13 margin. Evans scored the game-winner with her fourth ace after a UC Davis service error set up a 29-22 game point. Lowe hit five kills on 10 swings in Game 2, while Read led the Aggies with 4-0-8 hitting.
Santa Clara opened with a 5-0 start behind a kill and block by Cmaylo, then Evans jump-served her fifth and sixth aces to extend the lead to 9-1. UC Davis never closed the gap to less than five points, and McGiven pounded out two kills in a 5-0 run that pushed the Broncos out to a 16-7 advantage. Lowe and Cmaylo each enjoyed serving runs down the stretch to help SCU close out the sweep. Pura sent a kill deep into Aggie territory for the game point, then Lowe put a kill off the top of the UC Davis block for the match-winner.
UC Davis ends its 2006 season with home matches against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on November 17 and 18, respectively.
