Irvine, Calif. - The UC Davis men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped the final day of the UC Irvine/Lincoln Aquatics Shootout by competing in the championship bracket. The women, led by Ashley Cayford, went 2-1 in the triple dual-type meet and finished second behind Hawaii. The men, who were led by Scott Weltz, finished third by defeating Cal State Northridge to go 1-2.
The women defeated the University of San Diego (77-36) and host UC Irvine (71-37), but lost to the University of Hawaii (29-84) to finish second overall in the two-day tournament. Overall, the women earned a 5-1 record at the highly-competitive meet.
After going 2-1 on the first day, the men competed against three tough teams in Air Force, Cal State Northridge and the University of Hawaii. Despite valiant efforts all around, the Aggies lost by scores of 47-66 to the Falcons and 29-84 to the Rainbow Warriors. They bounced back and defeated Cal State Northridge (87-24) to earn third place.
For the women, Cayford led the way for the second straight day as she finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.24) and third in the 50 freestyle (24.92). Heidi Kucera and Shannon Rachford were the other two high Aggie finishers as they both earned second place finishes in their respective events. Kucera finished in 2:06.80 in the 200 individual medley while Rachford notched a time of 10:33.89 in the 1,000 free.
Scott Weltz won the 200 IM in 1:52.12 and placed second in the 200 backstroke (1:52.53) to again pace the men. Patrick Jacobson was the other top finisher on the men's side as he finished third in the 50 free on back-to-back nights with a time 21.64.
The relay events were the highlight of the night for the women as they finished second in both the 400 medley (1:52.53) and 400 free (1:52.53). The men also placed second in the 400 free with a time of 3:06.78.
On the diving side of things, Krysta Chaldekas again led the women with sixth-place finishes on both 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 206.80 and 232.45, respectively. For the men, Mike Hui secured the high score on both boards with a seventh-place score of 171.10 on the high board and a fourth-place score of 224.65 on the low board.
Aggie swimming and diving stays in Southern California for one more day as they take on UC San Diego tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m.
