Long Beach, Calif. - After three days of competition against some of the best teams in the country at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, the UC Davis men's swimming team held serve and finished seventh at the Speedo Cup for the second consecutive year. The Aggies totaled 416 points over the three-day event to finish ahead of eight other teams.
Scott Weltz again had the best individual performance on the day as he finished third in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 15:31.90. Weltz's time in the event betters the previous record set by Brad Winsor in 1991 (15:35.63). Winsor's record time came at the NCAA Division II National Championships and earned him the national crown that year. Alex Arbios also had a season-best time in the event as he finished eighth (15:57.88).
As it's been all weekend, the Aggies also got another big contribution from their relay team as the 400 free team of Weltz, Evan Kraus, Russ Underwood and Patrick Jacobson placed fourth in 3:08.49.
Kyle Payne had another solid finish for the Aggies as he finished 15th in the 200 breaststroke with his time of 2:10.42.
Evan Kraus placed in the top-20 in the 100 free as he finished 19th with a season-best time of 46.78.
Stanford claimed the men's team title for the fourth consecutive year with a point total of 1,803.5. Stanford's Shaun Phillips set a new meet record in the 1,650 free while teammate Hongzhe Sun tied a meet record in the 200 backstroke.
The Aggie men will not be in action again until 2007 when they host the Aggie Open on January 6. The women's team will compete in two weeks at the Akron University Invite on December 1.
