Senior Middle Powers Gauchos To Three-Game Sweep

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Olivia Waldowski had 13 kills and hit .667 to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 30-12, 30-19, 30-19 sweep over UC Davis in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Friday.

The Aggies fall to 4-23 for the season. The Gauchos keep their NCAA playoff hopes alive, improving to 17-11 overall.

Junior setter Katelyn Astruc hit .429 and led UC Davis with 12 digs and a pair of aces. Freshman Britt Erickson paced the Aggies offensively, knocking out 10 kills. Sophomore Chantal Paschetta and freshman Avreeta Singh each had 11 digs for the Aggies.

UCSB hit .328 for the match, with senior outside hitter Jamie Garbish recording 11 kills and a .310 hitting average. She had four services aces and a team-best 13 digs.

UCSB broke away early in Game 1, scoring five straight points behind Lauren McLaughlin's serving to craft a 7-2 lead, then pulling ahead by a 17-9 advantage on back-to-back kills from Waldowski. UC Davis committed five of its 10 Game 1 hitting errors during a run of seven unanswered points for the Gauchos. UCSB hit .375 in the opener, pounding out 17 kills against just two errors. The Aggies hit .000 for the game, managing 10 kills with the 10 errors.

The Aggies held tight for the early stages of Game 2, taking a 9-8 lead on a pair of Katelyn Astruc service aces. Waldowski posted a block assist and kill to push UCSB up by a 16-12 margin, then the Gauchos extended their lead on a 4-0 run to 23-17. UCSB scored four straight to close out the game, hitting 15-1 38 for a .368 clip in Game 2.

The Gauchos again exploded early in Game 3, serving up four aces and getting four Waldowski kills during a 17-10 start. UC Davis then committted three straight hitting errors to push UCSB up by 20-10. Later in the game, Garbisch served up two aces in a 5-0 run that put her team up by 28-14. UC Davis scored five straight behind Erickson's serving to climb back to 28-19, but Saraceno fired a kill through the Aggie midcourt to set up match point.

UC Davis finish the year at home against 17th-ranked Cal Poly Saturday. The match will be the career finale for four seniors: Nicole Read, Rachel Keener, Katie Wilson and Jenny Pierce.
