Aggies Open 2006 Season With Two Home Wins

Jan. 29, 2006

DAVIS, Calif. - Thirteen different players posted goals to help the UC Davis women's water polo team's offensive efforts on Sunday as they opened the 2006 season at home with games against Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State at Schaal Aquatics Center. Ashley Greenwood, who had five goals between the two games, helped the Ags to an 18-1 win over Cal State East Bay and a 17-3 win over Sonoma State later in the day.

In the first game of the day, the Aggies took the early lead in the first quarter with a goal six minutes and 32 seconds into the game by Casie Mota. Christi Raycraft followed with another UC Davis goal on the home team's next possession. Raycraft and Mota each added one more point apiece to end the quarter with a 4-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Aggies further distanced themselves from the Pioneers as they scored six unanswered goals. Two of the six came from freshman Lindsay Kiyama while Ashley Greenwood also added a pair of points from the center position, one on a rapid fire backhand.

In the third, the Ags continued to shut-out East Bay as they found the back of the net another six times. Freshman Sofia Patronas was the leading scorer in the third period with two goals scored in her first collegiate game. Megan Jimenez had a pair of goals in the fourth for UC Davis which sandwiched the lone Pioneer goal of the game which came from Amy Anguiniga. The final score was UC Davis over Cal State East Bay, 18-1.

In the Aggies evening game against the Seawolves of Sonoma State, the Ags jumped on the board with a goal from Katherine O'Rourke during the first posession. Less than a minute later O'Rourke posted her second of what would be four goals for the game on a six-on-five power play. Sonoma's Amanda Haddock managed a goal with 4:39 left in the quarter to bring the Seawolves within two. The Aggies fired back with three more unanswered goals, two coming from freshman Kiyama.

In the ensuing three quarters, the Aggies only allowed two more points from Sonoma, both during six-on-five power plays, while UC Davis accumulated nine more goals, including a hat trick from Greenwood. UC Davis defeated Sonoma State 17-3.

In other action on Sunday, Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay played a neutral site game in between the Aggies two pairings. The Seawolves got an early lead, posting a 5-0 first quarter, and were able to capture an 11-3 win. Sonoma was lead by Chelsea Hennan who posted a hat trick against the Pioneers.

With Sunday's two wins, the Aggies begin the season with a 2-0 record. UC Davis will be in action again next Wednesday, Feb. 4 when they head to Berkeley, Calif. to take on Cal in a 4 p.m. match-up.
