Men's Soccer Blanks Stanford For First Win

Sept. 4, 2005

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Dan Campbell converted a long serve from Juan Hernandez for a goal in the 16th minute to lead UC Davis to a 1-0 win over Stanford in a men's collegiate soccer game at Aggie Field Sunday. Campbell, who had entered the game less than a minute before scoring the game-winner, has accounted for both Aggie goals this season.

UC Davis improves to 1-0-1 for the season. The Cardinal moves to 0-1-1 overall.

The win also represents the second victory between a UC Davis team and a Pacific-10 program this weekend, as women's volleyball bested Washington State Saturday night.

Campbell entered the game just 15 minutes in during an injury substitution for teammate Ian Conklin. Moments later, Aggie midfielder Nicholas Lind saved a ball from rolling out of bounds by flipping it to Hernandez. Hernandez then lofted a ball deep into Stanford territory to Campbell, who in turn fired a missile out of reach of Cardinal goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen.

"After we scored, I wanted to keep attacking and keep putting the pressure on them. That was our gameplan," said Aggie head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "We had our forwards and midfielders press their team and keep the ball in their half. But Stanford did a good job breaking down the press and getting through us."

"We also had the wind blowing against us and it was helping them. Our driven balls were just floating up there and their defenders, who are good in the air, were able to win them and put it back on us."

Stanford had several opportunities to tie the contest before halftime. Luke Sager was awarded a free kick from about 10 yards above the Aggie penalty box in the 37th minute, but UC Davis freshman keeper Derek Shaffer was there for the save. Two minutes later, Cardinal sophomore Scott Bolkan sent a low drive toward the Aggie net but Shaffer stopped the attempt with a sliding save. Sager rebounded the shot but could not convert.

"All we ever ask from our goalkeepers is to make that one big save that will keep us in the game," said Coach Shaffer. "Derek made that huge save when the Stanford player got around us. Derek came out and played it perfectly. That's what he's good at - his game awareness and game sense is outstanding for such a young goalkeeper."

Marcus Ryan also sent a free kick from 25 yards in the 54th minute toward the UC Davis net but Shaffer again came up with a key save. The Cardinal's last substantial chance to tie the match came in the 77th minute as six players surrounded the Aggie penalty box. Junior midfielder Bret Shimizu finally got an open look and shot, but missed just left of the post. In all, Stanford outshot its hosts by a 14-4 margin.

Dwayne Shaffer was also quick to credit his defensive backfield for their contributions. "I thought our back four defenders were outstanding again. Paul Cain and Russell Brown are doing an outstanding job as center defenders, and we have two freshmen [Jordan Vanderpoorten and Jake Mogelson] on the outside who are doing a great job. We're shutting opponents down.

The Aggies continue their homestand with a game against Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday.
