MISSOULA, Mont. - Becky Jones and Michelle Boevers each had a team-high 25 kills as Gonzaga stopped a late Game 4 surge by UC Davis to seal a 24-30, 30-20, 30-23, 32-30 win over the Aggies in the final match of the Montana Invitiational women's volleyball tournament at West Auxilliary Gym Saturday.
UC Davis, which earlier lost a three-game match against the host Grizzlies, drop to 2-6 on the season.
The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in games behind five kills from freshman Chantal Paschetta and four more from middle blocker Jenny Pierce. As a team, UC Davis had 17 kills against just two errors for a torrid .405 hitting average. But Gonzaga turned up the offensive heat in Game 2, hitting .567 to tie the match at 1-1.
The Bulldogs never trailed in Game 3 and led for most of Game 4 until back-to-back kills by Aggie setter Katelyn Astruc tied the score at 19-19. The Zags reclaimed the lead and pushed ahead to a 26-23 advantage when Paschetta caught fire, knocking down four kills in a span of five points to give UC Davis a 29-27 game point. Boevers hit consecutive kills to retie the game at 29-29, then Lacey Bell put Gonzaga in match-point position with a kill to make it 30-29. Paschetta hammered down yet another kill to tie the game at 30-30. Bell and Jones finished with two kills to take Game 4 and prevent a fifth game.
UC Davis hit .230 in the match, its highest for the year. Paschetta finished with 17 kills and a .255 hitting average, while Pierce had numbers of 12 and .296, respectively. Nichole Brown led all players with 16 digs. She was later named as the sole Aggie on the all-tournament team.
In the Aggies' earlier match against Montana, Paschetta had a team-best 11 kills and nine kills but the Grizzlies outdug its guests by a 60-39 margin and posted 12 blocks en route to a 30-21, 30-24, 30-27 sweep.
Audrey Jensen had 12 kills and hit .375 for Montana offensively, while two-time Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honoree Claudia Houle had 16 digs and four blocks on defense.
UC Davis returns home to host 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, September 14.
