DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's water polo team has signed three prospective student-athletes, Laura Uribe, Dana Nelsen and Heidi Kucera, to National Letters of Intent during the November signing period. The three prospects are expected to enroll at UC Davis in the 2006 fall quarter.
Laura Uribe, who will be transferring as a junior, is a center from Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamunga, Calif. Uribe was named a 2004 community college All-American after she led the state in goals scored with 116 total and helped Chaffey to a fourth place finish at the State Championships during her freshman campaign. Uribe was named Most Valuable Player at the 2005 Southern California Tournament and was also named 2005 South Coast Conference MVP after posting 103 goals, 88 steals and 49 assists and helping lead her team to a 26-9 season record.
Uribe attended Jurupa Valley HS in Mira Loma, Calif. where she was a member of the water polo and swim teams. During her 2002 campaign she helped her water polo team to a Mountain View League title and second place in Southern Section and she also earned All-Southern Section honors after scoring a school record 116 goals in a single season. Uribe was also a two-year member of Riverside Water Polo Club.
Dana Nelsen, who hails from San Diego, Calif., is currently a senior at University City HS. Nelsen is a utility player who earned first team All City-Western honors as well as second-team All-San Diego Section accolades during her junior campaign. Nelsen was also a four-year varsity letter winner in swimming and two-year member of University City's varsity volleyball team.
Nelsen has spent the last three years as a member of the San Diego Shores water polo club where she helped her 16 & under team to a bronze medal at the 2004 National Junior Olympics.
Heidi Kucera is a utility player that hails from Atherton, Calif. where she is currently a senior at Menlo-Atherton HS. During both her junior and senior campaigns, Kucera earned first-team All-Peninsula Athletic League as well as first-team All-Central Coast Section honors. Kucera recently helped lead Menlo-Atherton to the CCS championship game where they narrowly lost to Menlo, 6-4.
Kucera is a member of the Nor Cal Water Polo Club where she earned first team All-America status at the 20 & under National Championships and was named an All-American Honorable Mention at the Women's Senior Nationals during the summer of 2005. Kucera is active in swimming and rodeo and intends on joining the UC Davis women's swim team as well.
The Aggie women's water polo team will start their 2006 season on Jan. 29 when they play Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State at UC Davis' Schaal Aquatic Center.
