DAVIS, Calif. - Ellen Porshneva scored a season-high 18 points and guard Jackie Turpin added 17 on Thursday as UC Davis posted its first-ever win over the University of San Francisco with a 69-55 nonconference women's basketball victory at The Pavilion.
The Aggies won for the second time in the past three games and are 2-3 while the Dons, who were led by a game-high 21 points from guard Dominique Carter, fell to 2-4. Two other UC Davis players scored in double figures besides Porshneva and Turpin. Guard Kimberly Smith hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 13 points while wing Jessica Campbell added 12. Three Aggies had six rebounds each.
UC Davis trailed early in the game but after tying it 4-4 a little more than five minutes into the contest, went on 19-8 run over the next nearly eight minutes to assume a 23-12 lead with 7 minutes, 1 second remaining in the first half. Porshneva scored eight points during the surge, Campbell pitched in with four and Turpin capped it with her third three-pointer in as many games. The Dons got no closer than five points the rest of the half as the Aggies went into intermission with a 33-24 advantage.
Smith hit a pair of three-pointers during an early stretch of the second half as the Aggies went up 42-28 with 16:14 to go. They led by as much as 52-34 and didn't let San Francisco cut the lead smaller than a dozen points during the final 11 minutes of the game.
Porshneva hit all eight of her free throw attempts - the Aggies were 22 of 25 overall from the line - on her way to a season-high 18 points but head coach Sandy Simpson pointed to her defense as another key.
"I thought she played really well, defensively," he said. "She was working hard defensively from the get-go."
Porshneva had 12 points in the first half and Turpin added 11. The Aggies made just one of six three-point tries and shot just 38.5 percent from the field before the break, but warmed up to make 55 percent (11 of 20) of their shots in the second half and finished at 45.7 percent. They also made four of six three-point attempts.
Carter hit 10 of 18 shots to pace the Dons, who shot 41.1 percent from the field, including making just two of 10 tries from beyond the arc. Forward Nickie Warren had a game-high nine rebounds and a game-best eight assists. Campbell led UC Davis with six assists. Lara Gray, Campbell and Smith each had six boards.
The Aggies are now 1-3 all-time against San Francisco.
UC Davis continues its three-game homestand with a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday against San Diego State.
