Alex Arbios had the top individual finish for UC Davis with a seventh place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a season best mark of 16:09.90 on the third and final day of the Speedo Cup being held at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif. The Aggie men finished the three day event in seventh place with 551 points while Stanford took first with 1,819 points after leading the pack for the entire weekend.
In the 200-yard backstroke Scott Weltz had the top finish for UC Davis with a mark of 1:52.29 earning him an 11th place finish. Weltz's time is a season best by over two seconds. Adam Pluemer and Jason Kim also posted their best 200 backstroke marks of the season in Saturday's consolation finals.
Nik Kemp posted the Aggies' best 100-yard freestyle time of the season with a mark of 46.84 which earned him an 18th place overall finish. Kyle Payne had the fastest Aggie finish in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in 2:10.50, a season best by over two seconds.
Russell Taylor and Toki Burke had back-to-back finishes in the 200-yard butterfly coming in 17th and 18th respectively. Taylor finished the event in 1:56.17 while Burke touched in 1:56.61. Both times were season bests, Taylor's is the top mark for an Aggie this season and Burke's time tops his previous season best by over two seconds.
Saturday ended on a high note for UC Davis as the Aggie 'A' relay took third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:05.74, almost a ten second improvement on their finish at the Big West Shootout earlier this season. BYU's 'A' relay won the event finishing in 3:01.13.
UC Davis finished the meet in seventh place out of 14 teams. The Stanford men won the Speedo Cup for the third year in a row. Hongzhe Sun was named the male Most Outstanding Athlete of the meet. Sun set a new Speedo Cup record in the 200 back with his NCAA "A" time of 1: 42.82.
The Aggie men will take a couple weeks off of competition before facing Big West opponent UC Irvine in a dual meet on Dec. 19 in Irvine, Calif.
