STANFORD, Calif. - The UC Davis women's water polo team split four preseason exhibition games on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Stanford posting wins against San Jose State and Western Water Polo Association conference foe Santa Clara and losses to Stanford and Arizona State. The Aggies' regular season begins on January 29.
Against Stanford, the Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Aggies managed to fight back in the fourth and outscore Stanford 4-2. Unfortunately, UC Davis came up one-point short as Stanford won 7-6. Six different Aggies scored in the loss.
In the game versus San Jose State, Christi Raycraft led the way with two goals scored. The Aggies and Spartans were tied at half 2-2 and then 3-3 at the end of the third, before UC Davis held San Jose scoreless in the final quarter while adding two goals to the board. The Ags came away with a 5-3 win.
The Aggies had a defensive battle with Arizona State with both teams being held scoreless in the first half of play. In the third, the Sun Devils found their offensive momentum and fired in three unanswered goals. In the fourth, Aggie Mary Lowe found the back of the Arizona cage to score the only UC Davis goal of the game. The Sun Devils took the 5-1 win.
Jessica Soza led the way for the Aggies against Santa Clara with a hat trick scored against the Broncos. The Broncos had a 3-2 lead at halftime, but the Aggies posted three unanswered goals in the second half to come away with a 5-3 win.
The Aggies regular season is scheduled to start Jan. 29 with home games scheduled against Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State.
