Aggie Men And Women Compete At 2005 Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - Freshman Scott Weltz scored 25 points for the Aggie men as they, along with the women's team, competed at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton on Saturday. Weltz scored points in three events while Hannah Watanabe was the top finisher amongst the women scoring in three individual events and a relay.

Weltz placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.66. He also tied for eighth in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 53.68, three places ahead of teammate Adam Pluemer who came in at 54.28. Weltz also captured a 15th place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:10.83 quickly followed by Russell Taylor who came in at 2:11.06.

On the women's side Hannah Watanabe was also 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.48. Watanabe was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay that captured third behind USC and Pacific with a mark of 1:37.27. The relay also consisted of Jill Olson, Emily Medved and Renee Dyer.

Dyer had the highest finish in the 100-yard freestyle for the UC Davis women with a 53.08 and a ninth place overall finish. Behind Dyer, in tenth, was Watanabe with a 53.14. Jill Olson and Emily Medved finished back-to-back with a 53.94 and a 54.03 respectively.

In the 200-yard butterfly Deborah Seiler had a good showing with an 11th place finish with a time of 2:12.28.

On the men's side Evan Kraus finished the100-yard freestyle in 47.55 with Nik Kemp coming in immediately after him at 47.56. Kemp had a top ten finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.16.

Taylor rounded out the men's top finishes tying for 10th in the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the wall at 52.43. The men's top finish was third place behind Stanford and Cal in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.49.

Jennifer Ginsberg had the highest single event finish of both teams placing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. Ginsberg finished with a time of 59.63. Melanie Covert placed ninth in the 100-yard back with a 1:00.46 and was followed by Watanabe who took tenth with a 1:00.82. In the 200-yard backstroke the Ags had another set of back-to-back finishes with Jill Olson coming in at 2:14.07 and Janice Leung clocking a 2:15.20 placing them 14th and 15th in the event.

The Aggie men's and women's teams competed only in the Saturday portion of the two-day meet. Both teams along with the diving team will be back in action at the Big West Shootout being held next Friday and Saturday in Irvine.
