Alexis “Pookie” Gonzalez is in her first season with the UC Davis women’s volleyball coaching staff, serving as a volunteer assistant with the Aggies for the 2019 campaign.
A native of Fresno, Calif., Gonzalez was a four-year team captain as a setter at Northern Illinois, missing only one game in her distinguished career while finishing second in program history (and No. 10 in the history of the Mid-American Conference) with 4,846 assists. Her career assist numbers are the most by a Husky in the NCAA’s rally scoring era (since 2001) and the third most in the history of the conference in that same span.
Gonzalez was twice named to the All-MAC first team and she was the MAC Setter of the Year as a senior, averaging 10.38 assists per set. She was also named to the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2012, served as the volleyball’s team representative to the NIU Captains Council from 2013-15, and was a board representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2015-16.
Following her collegiate career, Gonzalez was the head setting coach for Club Fusion Volleyball in Huntley, Ill., and served as the assistant varsity and head sophomore coach at DeKalb High School, helping lead the Barbs to a section championship in 2016 as well as a conference and regional title in 2017.
Gonzalez prepped at Bullard HS in Fresno, Calif., helping the Knights to 70 wins and three County Metro Athletic Conference titles in her four seasons. She played club for the Central Cal Volleyball Club, helping her team to a fifth place finish in the American Division at Nationals in 2010.
She graduated from Northern Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a minor in journalism in 2016, before earning her master’s in sports management from NIU in 2018.
