Joey Frantz

After serving as the program’s volunteer assistant coach in 2019, Joey Frantz enters his first season as a full-time assistant during the 2020-21 school year.

In his first year with UC Davis, Frantz helped mentor Aggie goalkeeper Jonah Addington to a slew of honors during his junior year, including ACWPC All-America honorable mention, Western Water Polo Association Tournament Most Valuable Player, and all-conference second-team laurels.

UC Davis finished 16-8 overall and a perfect 7-0 in WWPA play, taking home the league’s regular season and tournament titles en route to an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

A member of the USA Water Polo National Team goalkeeper coaching staff for the Olympic Development Program since 2017, Frantz’s coaching resume includes stops at American River College and Diablo Valley College, including helping the Beavers to a Big 8 Conference title, a NorCal regional championship, and a third-place finish at the state championships in 2013.

He has also served as a goalkeeper coach for a number of club programs, including the American River WPC (2012), Capital Premier Aquatics (2013), and 680 Water Polo Club (2017-19).

His coaching career began as an assistant for both the boy’s and girl’s teams at Rio Americano HS for two seasons, leading the Raiders to a pair of section titles on the boy’s side and one section championship to go along with a runner-up finish with the girl’s team. Frantz also served as the head coach of the boy’s program at Concord HS in 2014 and was an assistant with the women’s program at Miramonte HS in 2018.

A native of Chicago, Ill., Frantz was a four-year letter winner as a goalkeeper at Pacific from 2007-11, graduating with a degree in music management and communication.

He attended Brother Rice High School where he lettered in swimming and water polo, twice earning all-state honors and setting an Illinois state record for most saves in a state tournament with 44 over the course of three matches. Frantz was a member of the U.S. Youth National Team in 2006 and 2007.

Frantz is married to his wife, Becky, and has a son, Jack.
