Davis, Calif. — Ivan Savkin and Aiden Mueller reached the finals of their respective singles flights while teaming up to get to the finals of the blue flight for doubles on Saturday at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational.
Savkin took care of Menlo College's Robin McAlpine (6-4, 6-3) in the quarterfinals and came back to defeat Aggie teammate Nadaul Cheam (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) after dropping the opening set. Savkin will take on Sebastian Vlahos of Sacramento State in Sunday's finals.
Aiden Mueller won both of his quarterfinals and semifinals matches in straight sets on Saturday, defeating Sacramento State's Nick Bowles (7-5, 6-0) and Saint Mary's Bastien Maxant (6-1, 6-4). Mueller will face Nevada's Gregoire Valente in Sunday's finals.
The finals matches for Savkin and Mueller both begin at 10:30 a.m. PT.
Prior to their singles' victories, Mueller and Savkin reached the blue flight doubles finals with an 8-7 (8-6) win over Sacramento State's Adryan Ballesteros and Doni Gashi. They will face Pacific's Adi Dagan and Niv Zuckerman at 9 a.m. PT.
Other Aggies to compete on Saturday in the winners' brackets included Cyrus Ahmad and Nadaul Cheam, who were knocked off by Pacific's Zuckerman and Dagan in the blue flight doubles semifinals. Cheam also played a pair of singles matches, defeating Santa Clara's Tiago Boschmans (4-6, 7-5, 7-6(3)) in the quarterfinals of the blue flight singles before being eliminated by Savkin in the semifinals. Ahmad also played a round of consolation singles and was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Pacific's Samuel Bautista.
"I was really excited to see the fight and tenacity from all of the Aggies today," UC Davis head coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "We were down early in both doubles and fought back to win tiebreakers. In singles play, it was great to get our freshman Aiden Mueller through to the finals of the white flight. It has been a tremendous run by him. Ivan Savkin is providing great leadership on how to battle throughout the whole day and how to compose yourself during both doubles and singles. It was a fantastic job by all of the Aggies."
The semifinals of the double Blue flight will both start Saturday at 9 a.m. with Ahmad/Cheam facing Adi Dagan and Zuckerman of Pacific, while Mueller/Savkin take on Sacramento State's Adryan Ballestero and Doni Gashi. The winners will advance to the Blue flight finals Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
In Saturday's quarterfinal singles action, Mueller will battle Sacramento State's Nick Bowles in White flight action at 10:15 a.m., while Ahmad (vs. Brendan Loh, Saint Mary's), Cheam (vs. Tiago Boschmans, Santa Clara) and Savkin (vs. Robert McAlpine, Menlo College) all begin Blue flight quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. Winners will advance to the semifinals with the White flight at 1:30 p.m. and the Blue flight at 1:45 p.m. The dates and times for the finals of both singles flights with Aggies participating in them have yet to be announced.
